We'd seen Grievous pull a similar move on Gha Nachkt, but Ventress' kill was even less motivated and more surprising.

Ventress and Argyus had just successfully worked together to free Nute Gunray on Dooku's orders, but all it took was Argyus gloating about the mission and making it sound like it was his victory alone (and that he would be telling Dooku just that), for Ventress to ignite her lightsaber through Argyus' back, instantly killing him. But the way he went out in " Cloak of Darkness" was both a shock and a defining moment for Asajj Ventress, Dooku's apprentice. It's hard to argue that Faro Argyus didn't get what he deserved – After all, he was a traitor to the Republic who had no qualms about turning on and murdering men he served alongside, when offered the right amount of credits from Count Dooku. Despite only knowing Hevy for that one episode, his loss was a surprisingly powerful one. But seeing the Clone Trooper named Hevy stay behind in the listening post he'd been stationed at and make the decision to set off an explosive he knew would result in his own death, in order to stop a group of Battle Droids on an ominous mission, was much – excuse the term – heavier material than we'd seen yet on the series. Okay, I'm cheating a bit with this one, in that it's not perhaps quite as "dark" a moment, per se, as others – it's more a classic heroic/tragic bit, as a soldier makes the ultimate sacrifice to do the right thing and save his friends.

Thankfully, the makers of The Clone Wars would quickly learn how to much better balance tone and not have such jarring juxtapositions as time went on. This was a very nasty bit of business, showing just how merciless Dooku and Grievous can be – but it was unfortunately also very much undercut by the off-putting, out of place jokey dialogue of the Battle Droids. Soon, Plo and his men see what is occurring – a group of Battle Droids is moving from one escape pod to the next, cracking open each Pod and sending one man after another hurtling out of the Pod and to his doom. Eventually, they come across one of the many other escape pods that also came from their ship and an unsettling discovery – the pod has been busted opened, leaving the Clone Troopers from that pod dead, having been exposed to the vacuum of space.

Though we're sure there's more to come… In the second episode of The Clone Wars, " Rising Malevolence," a Republic ship has been destroyed, and Plo Koon and a group of Clone Troopers find themselves adrift in an escape pod.
